Greek shipping company Metrostar Management has placed an order for the construction of two MR-class tankers at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard. The new vessels, each with a deadweight of 50,000 tonnes, will be dedicated to carrying refined petroleum products and are expected to be delivered to the owner in 2028.
According to industry sources, each tanker is priced at around $53 million, bringing the total contract value to approximately $106 million. The vessels are listed in the company’s fleet records under hull numbers HN 2973 and HN 2974. Both tankers will sail under the Liberian flag and will have a length of 183 metres and a beam of 32.3 metres.
The latest order marks another step in Metrostar’s ongoing expansion of its tanker business. The company’s current fleet includes seven tankers, comprising one Suezmax vessel, four LR2 tankers with a deadweight of 115,000 tonnes, and two LR1 tankers with a deadweight of 75,000 tonnes.
At the same time, Metrostar continues to expand its presence in the container shipping sector. In 2025, the company acquired three feeder container vessels with a capacity of 1,300 TEU each, returning to the segment after an absence of more than a decade. The acquisition of the new MR tankers highlights the sustained demand for modern product tankers and the continued activity of Greek shipowners at Asian shipyards.
