Tencent has begun opening the artificial intelligence ecosystem of WeChat to mini-program developers, marking a major step toward integrating AI into one of China’s largest digital platforms. The initiative allows companies to embed AI agents into WeChat services used by more than one billion people.
In the first phase, access has been granted to participants in pilot programs, including some of China’s leading internet companies. JD.com plans to deploy AI agents across its e-commerce, grocery delivery, and logistics services. Meituan will integrate AI into its local services platform, while KFC China will enable customers to place orders using natural-language requests. Travel platform Trip.com has already connected services for flight bookings, hotel reservations, and trip planning.
Tencent views WeChat AI as a unified intelligence layer spanning its core ecosystems, including communications, social networking, content, payments, and mini-programs. The initiative reflects a broader trend in China’s technology sector, where companies are moving beyond standalone chatbots and turning AI into a practical tool for everyday tasks.
Industry experts see significant potential in the project, although questions surrounding monetization and large-scale deployment remain unresolved.
