Tajikistan continues to increase its importance within Central Asia’s transportation network by developing international logistics routes and expanding cooperation with neighboring countries. According to Deputy Minister of Transport Shoista Saidmurodzoda, the country currently serves as a transit point for ten international transport corridors, including four routes that are part of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) program.
Transport connectivity remains one of the government’s strategic priorities, as Tajikistan’s geographic location allows it to serve as an important bridge between China, Central Asia, South Asia, the Caucasus, and other international markets.
In recent years, the country has launched several initiatives aimed at modernizing transport infrastructure and facilitating cross-border freight movement. One of the key milestones was the signing of the Agreement on Strengthening Land Transport Connectivity in Central Asia in September 2023, which created additional opportunities for regional transit development.
In 2025, Tajikistan also initiated the development of the Strategy for the Digitalization of Multimodal Transport Corridors of CIS Member States. The strategy focuses on implementing modern digital technologies for freight transportation, data exchange, and the management of international logistics flows.
Another significant step was the signing of an international road transport agreement between Tajikistan and China in September 2025. Industry experts believe the agreement will expand opportunities for road carriers and improve trade efficiency between the two countries.
In April 2026, a resolution aimed at strengthening cooperation in transport connectivity and logistics for sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region was adopted. The initiative seeks to further enhance international transport routes and improve the efficiency of regional supply chains.
The country’s transport infrastructure continues to undergo modernization. Tajikistan has approximately 26,000 kilometers of roads and a railway network extending 958 kilometers. Despite the challenges posed by its mountainous terrain, the country is steadily improving transport accessibility and expanding its transit capabilities.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has played a significant role in supporting infrastructure development. Over the years, the bank has helped rehabilitate major highways along key CAREC corridors, improving connectivity with neighboring countries and international transport routes.
Currently, three transport projects with a combined value of $242.6 million are being implemented in Tajikistan with ADB support. These investments are aimed at increasing road capacity, improving traffic safety, and strengthening international logistics corridors.
As trade volumes continue to grow between Central Asia, China, and the South Caucasus, Tajikistan’s importance as a regional transit hub is expected to increase further. Ongoing infrastructure upgrades, logistics digitalization, and corridor development are creating favorable conditions for higher freight volumes and deeper integration into international transport networks.
