The tanker sector continues to demonstrate outstanding profitability, and the reasons extend far beyond the aftermath of the crisis surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. According to Scorpio Tankers, the industry has entered a new phase in which the reduction of the global tanker fleet due to international sanctions has become one of the key market drivers.
Chief Operating Officer Lars Dencker Nielsen said that in all his years in the industry, he has never witnessed such a strong July and August. According to him, the traditional summer lull failed to appear this year. Demand for tanker transportation remains exceptionally strong, while freight rates continue to hover near record highs.
Scorpio Tankers also believes that a substantial share of vessels belonging to the so-called sanctioned fleet will not return to the international market. This continues to limit available tonnage and supports strong earnings for tanker operators, even as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have eased.
According to market analysts, if current conditions persist, tanker companies could finish the year with one of their strongest financial performances of the past decade.
