Chinese steelmaker Baosteel is completing a major modernization of its blast furnaces by integrating AI technologies to enhance production efficiency. Once the upgrade is finished, all four blast furnaces at the company’s Shanghai facility will operate using intelligent control systems.

One of the key elements of the modernization is Blast Furnace No. 1, which has been in operation since 1985. Powered by artificial intelligence, the system will be able to predict temperature fluctuations in real time, optimize production processes, and ensure stable equipment performance.

According to Baosteel, AI implementation will reduce the annual operating costs of each blast furnace by more than 10 million yuan while cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 5 kilograms per tonne of hot metal produced.

The company says the intelligent upgrade will reduce reliance on manual operations, improve product quality, and set a new benchmark for the digital transformation of China’s steel industry.
