Guangdong is launching a new phase of industrial development focused on seven strategic sectors. Key priorities include artificial intelligence, intelligent robotics, healthcare, and energy. Provincial authorities believe the initiative will help maintain Guangdong’s status as one of China’s leading technology hubs.

“The future of industry is determined not by individual technologies, but by the speed at which they move from the laboratory to the marketplace.”

The provincial government has already approved a comprehensive action plan aimed at accelerating the growth of emerging industries and improving industrial planning. Particular emphasis will be placed on establishing new high-tech manufacturing facilities and commercializing scientific breakthroughs.

Today, Guangdong ranks among China’s leaders in the artificial intelligence sector. Last year, the province’s core AI industry exceeded 300 billion yuan, representing 40% year-on-year growth. Guangdong now accounts for approximately one-quarter of China’s entire AI industry.

One of the province’s greatest strengths is its robust innovation ecosystem. Guangdong is home to around 74,000 high-tech enterprises and 56,000 technology-focused small and medium-sized businesses, as well as the headquarters of global technology leaders including Huawei, Tencent, Midea, and DJI.

The industry’s growth is supported by an extensive scientific infrastructure. Guangdong hosts a network of national and provincial laboratories, along with joint research centers established in partnership with Hong Kong and Macao. This ecosystem enables scientific discoveries to be rapidly transformed into industrial applications.

The province’s manufacturing sector is already demonstrating the results of its technological transformation. Guangdong is home to mass-production lines for Xpeng AeroHT flying cars, next-generation OLED displays, and tri-fold smartphones. According to provincial officials, the region’s highly integrated industrial supply chain significantly shortens the path from laboratory research to large-scale manufacturing.

The economic impact continues to grow. Last year, Guangdong’s twenty largest industrial clusters generated 31.7% of the province’s GDP, with their combined output exceeding 10 trillion yuan.

Experts also point to Guangdong’s integration with the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area as a major competitive advantage. The combination of Hong Kong’s and Macao’s world-class universities with the industrial capabilities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen has created one of the world’s most effective innovation ecosystems, accelerating the development of a high-tech economy.
