NYK acquired the remaining 50% stake in Saga Welco from its former partner after receiving all required regulatory approvals. The deal was officially completed on July 20, while the financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Saga Welco specializes in open-hatch shipping services and operates a fleet of 48 vessels. The company provides semi-liner services worldwide, primarily from the east coast of South America, transporting pulp, aluminum ingots, steel products, forest products, and project cargo.
Following the acquisition, Saga Welco will transition from a pool management model to an owner-operator structure. The company stated that all existing customer contracts, operational arrangements, and business relationships will remain unchanged.
According to NYK, the acquisition will strengthen the group’s position in the dry bulk shipping market, improve the efficiency of Saga Welco’s specialized fleet, and enable closer integration of the Norwegian operator into NYK’s global logistics network.
