Sumitomo transferred its stake in the Northwind project to Publiwind, a consortium comprising Belgian insurer Ethias, investment company SOCOFE SA, and the Belgian sovereign wealth fund SFPIM. The transaction is expected to be completed during the current fiscal year, subject to the required regulatory approvals.
The Northwind offshore wind farm is located 37 km off the Belgian coast in the North Sea. It consists of 72 wind turbines installed across an area of 14.5 square kilometers and generates enough clean electricity to supply more than 180,000 households. Since March 2024, the asset has been jointly owned by Sumitomo Corporation and Aspiravi Offshore, while Parkwind has continued to provide operations and maintenance services.
The divestment marks another step in Sumitomo’s strategy to streamline its offshore wind portfolio. Earlier, the JERA Nex BP joint venture acquired Sumitomo’s 30% stake in the 219 MW Northwester 2 offshore wind farm, as well as its 39.02% stake in the 165 MW Nobelwind project, increasing its ownership in the latter to 80.1%. Financial terms of the transactions were not disclosed.
Throughout its involvement in these projects, Sumitomo participated in every stage of development—from project planning and construction to long-term operation—contributing to the steady growth of Belgium’s offshore wind energy sector.
