Sweden’s Largest Truck Stop Is Coming to Örebro
Swedish energy company Preem is preparing to open a new truck stop in the Berglunda area of Örebro in September. The facility is designed for professional drivers and will combine secure parking, rest facilities, refueling and heavy-duty vehicle charging at a single location.
According to Tidningen Proffs, the project will provide around 50 truck parking spaces. Preem’s current facility information specifies 47 fenced parking spaces.
The site is designed for both shorter breaks and daily rest periods.
Berglunda was selected because of its importance to Swedish freight transport. Around 40,000–50,000 vehicles pass through the logistics area every day, with heavy vehicles accounting for approximately 20% of the traffic.
Parking Area Will Be Fenced and Monitored
Security is one of the main elements of the new truck stop.
The parking area will be fenced and covered by video surveillance. Particular attention has also been given to road markings, site navigation and the separation of heavy trucks, passenger cars and vehicles using the charging infrastructure.
Patrik Johansson, head of Preem’s service station network in Sweden, said demand for safe, functional and well-equipped rest areas for professional drivers has continued to increase.
For long-haul drivers, such facilities are particularly important for complying with mandatory driving and rest-time requirements. Reliable parking also reduces the need to leave trucks in unsuitable or potentially unsafe locations.
Drivers Will Get Showers and a Dedicated Lounge
A dedicated Truck Lounge will be available at the site. Facilities will include showers, toilets, a microwave oven, free Wi-Fi and areas where drivers can rest or spend time during longer stops.
A restaurant, heavy-truck wash and inspection facility for commercial vehicles are already located nearby.
As a result, the Berglunda Truck Stop is intended to operate as more than a parking lot, providing a broader service hub for regional and long-distance truck drivers.
Eight Heavy-Duty Chargers Will Deliver Up to 400 kW
The complex is also being developed with electric trucks in mind.
Eight charging points for heavy-duty electric vehicles are located directly next to the truck stop, each providing maximum charging capacity of up to 400 kW.
Preem introduced the Berglunda charging infrastructure as part of a broader expansion of its electric vehicle charging network. For freight operators, high-power charging can allow mandatory driver breaks to be combined with replenishing a truck’s traction battery.
Drivers will also have access to Preem Evolution Diesel, renewable Preem Redefine HVO100 and AdBlue.
Gas refueling is available a few hundred meters away through cooperation with Gasum.
Berglunda Becomes a Multi-Energy Transport Hub
The combination of diesel, HVO100, gas and high-power electric charging reflects the changing requirements of the heavy transport market.
Freight companies increasingly need infrastructure capable of supporting conventional, renewable and battery-electric trucks at the same location.
For Preem, the Örebro project provides an opportunity to test a broader service concept specifically designed for professional road transport.
The charging infrastructure is particularly significant as the number of heavy electric trucks gradually increases in Sweden and other Nordic markets.
Örebro Project Will Serve as a Pilot
Preem is treating the Berglunda Truck Stop as a pilot project.
Experience gained from the facility is expected to be used when the company develops additional heavy-vehicle service locations at strategically important sites across Sweden.
The Örebro project could therefore become the first step toward a wider network where freight operators can combine driver rest, refueling, charging and vehicle services.
Such infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for European road freight as the industry faces a persistent shortage of safe truck parking while simultaneously shifting toward electric and alternative-fuel vehicles.
