Chinese regulators are evaluating stricter export controls on artificial intelligence technologies and semiconductors. According to the Financial Times, citing sources familiar with the matter, officials led by China’s Ministry of Commerce are discussing the proposed measures with leading AI developers and chipmakers.
The report says Beijing intends to restrict the overseas transfer of advanced AI models, key training data, and chip design technologies. The discussions involve some of China’s largest technology companies, including Huawei, Alibaba, ByteDance, and Zhipu. Authorities are also considering restrictions that would prevent foreign manufacturers, such as Qualcomm and TSMC, from producing advanced semiconductors based on Chinese-designed technologies.
The proposed measures could be incorporated into an updated catalogue of technologies that are either prohibited or restricted for export. Analysts believe the move is aimed at keeping strategically important innovations within China while strengthening government oversight of AI development amid the country’s ongoing technological competition with the United States.
