China has expanded its zero-tariff policy to cover imports from 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations. The new measures came into effect at the beginning of May and are aimed at strengthening trade and economic cooperation between China and African nations.

According to Eric Dodu-Amoo, Head of the China Desk at Ghana’s Ministry of Finance, the initiative could become a major driver of economic development across the continent. He described Beijing’s decision as “highly transformative and innovative,” highlighting its potential to expand export opportunities for African producers.

The removal of tariffs is expected to have a positive impact on agriculture, agro-processing, and light manufacturing, enabling local companies to gain more effective access to the world’s largest consumer market. In addition, the initiative is likely to accelerate the development of regional value chains and increase the added value of goods produced in African countries.

Experts say that expanded duty-free access to the Chinese market could also serve as an additional catalyst for investment inflows and industrial growth across the continent.
