Friuli Venezia Giulia Renews Its Agreement With SDAG

The Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia has renewed its cooperation with SDAG Spa, the operator of the Gorizia interport, to support road hauliers during the latest phase of works on Slovenia’s H4 expressway.

The agreement gives truck drivers free access to three equipped parking areas at the logistics terminal. The measure is intended to prevent long queues near the border, provide safe waiting areas and distribute freight traffic more evenly across the regional road network.

A similar scheme was introduced during the first phase of the H4 modernisation programme in 2025. Regional authorities said that experience helped limit disruption and preserve the operation of the Gorizia logistics hub.

H4 Works Redirect Freight Traffic Through Fernetti

The second major phase of construction began on July 6 and is expected to continue until November. The works are part of a broader modernisation programme covering the H4 corridor between the Slovenian A1 motorway and the Nova Gorica–Gorizia border area.

During the construction period, international transit vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes and travelling from Italy toward Ljubljana cannot use the affected H4 route or the parallel R2-444 regional road. Trucks are being redirected through the Fernetti–Sežana border crossing.

The diversion is expected to increase traffic on the Italian A4 and the routes around Trieste, Lisert and Villesse. It comes during a summer already shaped by seasonal truck restrictions across Europe, roadworks and heavy tourist traffic.

Gorizia Provides 465 Free Truck Spaces

The three parking areas at the Gorizia interport provide approximately 465 spaces across more than 82,000 square metres.

The facilities will offer more than basic parking. Drivers and transport companies will also have access to technical assistance, security services and support for customs operations. This is particularly important when congestion or border controls force vehicles to wait before continuing their journeys.

Safe truck parking remains a serious issue across Europe. Other countries are also investing in larger and better-equipped facilities, including the covered parking complex for 383 trucks being developed in Spain.

Friuli Venezia Giulia has allocated up to €300,000 to cover the cost of the service. The initiative is expected to remain in place for around 130 days, corresponding to the estimated duration of the H4 closure.

Carriers Should Review Routes Before Reaching the Border

The free parking scheme will reduce pressure on the border area, but it will not eliminate the longer distances and additional travel time created by the diversion.

Carriers operating between Italy and Slovenia should review routes before departure and distinguish between international transit traffic and deliveries involving loading or unloading in the affected region. Drivers should also check current traffic conditions before approaching the Gorizia or Fernetti crossings.

Delivery windows, driving and rest times, fuel requirements and available parking along the alternative route may all need to be recalculated. During peak periods, the additional traffic around Trieste and the A4 could create delays well beyond the immediate H4 construction zone.
