Magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Indonesia: death toll rises to 70

The death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province has risen to 70. Another 132 people were injured, China Daily reports, citing local authorities.

The epicenter was located near Mbay in Nagekeo Regency. The earthquake struck on August 15.

Bramantyo, operations director of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, said 40 of those injured suffered serious injuries, while 92 sustained minor injuries. There have been no new reports of missing people.

After the search operations were completed, rescue teams began surveying the affected areas.

Flores records 2,357 aftershocks

According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, 2,357 aftershocks had been recorded in Flores as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The strongest had a magnitude of 6.2. Another 24 tremors were stronger than magnitude 5, while 72 aftershocks were felt by local residents.

Rescue teams have sent helicopters to remote areas to transport medical personnel and evacuate people who need medical assistance.

More than 5,000 residents remain in evacuation centers across the province after leaving their homes following the earthquake.

Specialists are surveying damaged areas and monitoring further seismic activity.
