Regulation No. 190 Adds New Restrictions on the A10

Austria has published Regulation No. 190 introducing additional summer truck restrictions on the A10 Tauern Motorway. The measure applies to lorries and articulated vehicles with a maximum permissible weight above 7.5 tonnes, as well as lorries with trailers where the combined maximum permissible weight exceeds 7.5 tonnes.

The restrictions cover the entire section between the Salzburg interchange, where the A10 connects with the A1 West Motorway, and the Villach interchange. The Austrian Association of International Road Transport Companies, AISÖ, drew carriers’ attention to the new calendar after its publication.

The A10 restrictions supplement Austria’s ordinary weekend and public holiday truck bans. They also expand the list of seasonal measures already affecting European road freight in 2026, which K2Cargo News covered in its overview of summer truck driving restrictions across Europe.

Southbound Truck Ban Toward Villach

On the southbound carriageway toward Villach, trucks covered by the regulation are prohibited from travelling between Salzburg and Villach from 07:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays from July 11 through August 8, 2026.

The same restriction will return on Saturdays from August 22 through September 5. The first southbound restriction therefore took effect on July 11.

For vehicles also covered by Austria’s nationwide weekend ban, the operational impact may be considerably longer than the eight-hour A10 restriction suggests. The ordinary weekend ban begins at 15:00 on Saturday and continues until 22:00 on Sunday. In practice, affected vehicles may be unable to use the corridor continuously from 07:00 on Saturday until late Sunday evening, unless an applicable exemption permits the journey.

Northbound Restrictions Continue Until September 19

In the northbound direction toward Salzburg, the ban applies between the Villach and Salzburg interchanges from 07:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays from July 18 through August 8.

A second period will run from August 22 through September 19. Northbound transport will therefore remain affected two weeks longer than southbound traffic, an important detail for carriers planning return journeys through Austria at the end of the summer season.

August 15 is not included in either of the special A10 periods. However, it is the Assumption of Mary, a statutory public holiday in Austria. The nationwide public holiday truck ban applies from 00:00 to 22:00, meaning the absence of a separate A10 restriction does not create a normal operating Saturday for most heavy vehicles.

Carriers Need to Recalculate Transit Windows

The new calendar makes Saturday transit through the Salzburg–Villach corridor significantly more difficult. Transport companies may need to move departures forward, revise loading and delivery windows, and identify legal parking before vehicles enter the restricted section.

The timing is particularly important for international operations in which delays on the A10 can affect subsequent delivery slots, driving and rest-time calculations, border crossings and customer appointments. Waiting areas near major intersections and logistics centres may also fill quickly shortly before the ban begins.

Carriers should check the special A10 regulation together with Austria’s general weekend and public holiday rules before departure. Any applicable exemption should be verified in advance and supported by the required transport documents rather than assumed solely from the urgency or nature of a shipment.
